This course will explore the different ways to recycle precious metals and give guidance to makers about how they can put these methods into practice in their own studios.
In this one-day advanced masterclass, CSSJ will show participants how to melt down precious metals, such as gold and silver, and turn them into fabulous cast pieces of jewellery using simple tools and equipment. We’ll begin by learning how to identify suitable metals for recycling, then we’ll demonstrate how to safely melt your metals down. We’ll explore different ways to re-form your metal including granulation, sand & water casting , and how to create ingots that can be drawn down into wire or rolled into sheets. Participants will leave the workshop with a unique cast ring made using your own recycled metal, as well as a collection of experimental samples, and all the skills and confidence you need to start recycling metals in your own jewellery studio. Our tutors will provide expert guidance on what metals can be successfully recycled and will discuss impurities, metal melting equipment, and techniques used to get the most out of your old or scrap metal pieces
Level: This workshop is suitable for experienced jewellery makers at intermediate level and above with torch experience who are confident using a large sievert gas torch. This is a skills and samples focussed workshop for experienced jewellers who are able to translate these new techniques into their own jewellery practise.
