Liu Qiwei is a jeweller, silversmith and researcher based in Edinburgh whose work explores the contradictions and connections between materials crafts and geometric elements.
In his collection of art jewellery, Qiwei juxtaposes the whimsical elements of cakes and candies with the profound symbolism of animal bone ashes. In an experimental process, Qiwei creates raised geometric shapes special material using bone ashes and enamel powder resulting in a unique surface texture and internal foam structure. These pebble ‘cakes’ are mounted into skilfully made precious metal ‘cases’ and decorated with gold foil to create remarkable ‘cupcake’ objects.
Qiwei is undertaking a Ph.D. in Design at Edinburgh College of Art and holds an MA from School of Jewellery (Birmingham) and a BA in Jewellery Design from China University of Geosciences (Wuhan).
