Blodewedd/Flower Face

Loosely inspired by a story in the Mabinogion where a woman initially created out of flowers is eventually transformed into an owl. This large piece consists of a body defined by leaves. These are initially formed onto a mould separately and then glued together to make up the shape of the body. The wings are a combinations of Ash veneers for the lighter feathers and Ovangkoi feathers barred with Smoked Oak. The wings are assembled using piano wire where the feathers don’t overlap.
The wings flap and there is also movement in the limbs.

Blodewedd/Flower Face

This closeup shows the construction of the feathers and wings of the Flower Face item. Each feather has angled book-matched veneers. In the case of the Ash feathers this is continuous, with the darker feathers, the Ovangkoi is interspersed with stripes of Smoked Oak, creating the barred effect of an owl’s wing.
