Learn ancient techniques to create modern mosaics with expert tutor Mieke Ceusters, exploring Roman mosaic styles, materials, and techniques.
24 Jul - 27 Jul 2025
This four-day mosaic masterclass in Falkirk, Scotland, led by Belgian mosaicist Mieke Ceusters, is ideal for beginners and improvers. Participants will create a modern mosaic inspired by ancient Roman techniques using marble and optional smalti accents. The course covers the origins and cultural significance of Roman mosaics, with a focus on traditional methods, including how to cut tesserae manually with a hammer and hardie.
Students will learn design principles, including color, balance, and historical inspiration, and how to apply these to their mosaic. Emphasis is placed on proper tesserae placement, spacing, adhesion, and creating visual flow (andamento). The course also explores composition, color harmony, and troubleshooting common mosaic challenges. By the end of the masterclass, participants will complete a 30x30cm Roman-inspired mosaic artwork on a wooden board, gaining valuable skills and a finished piece to take home. This hands-on experience promotes patience, precision, and creativity.
