Boxmaking is an essential skill for bookbinders, but also handy for printmakers and artists as a way to store work.
A Solander - or dropback box - is a versatile and archival way to store special items. We’ll make a box to house A5 items, but I’ll share my method of measuring and cutting so that you can go forward and make boxes of different sizes to house (almost) anything. They don’t require heavy or expensive tools, so you’ll be able to make these at home.
During this one day workshop, we’ll learn:
- How to make a custom fitted box
- Constructing nesting trays
- ’Turning in’, or covering trays with covering material
- Making a hardcover case
- Attaching our case around our trays for an accurate fit
- Measuring and cutting materials accurately
as well as lots of tips and tricks of the trade along the way.
