With the Edinburgh festival season underway this August, the city is brimming with a wide array of craft experiences to explore.

From chances to purchase directly from makers to exhibitions showcasing international stars and emerging talents, here are our top picks from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Edinburgh Art Festival.

1. Dazzle at Dovecot 2024

Dazzle, the major annual jewellery exhibition, returns this year to Dovecot Studios for its 42nd Edinburgh Festival showcase. Dazzle 2024 will feature over 55 contemporary jewellers exhibiting more than 2,000 pieces, all available for sale.

2. Ceramics at the Shore

An exhibition of ceramics by Fiona Thompson and Chris Donnelly of Cyan Clayworks. This new work both functional and sculptural will be showcased in their open-access studio.

3. Aetla Exhibition: A Celebration of Scottish Jewellery

Explore and celebrate the creativity and diversity of Scottish jewellery at an exhibition hosted by ætla, a fine jewellery boutique in Stockbridge.

4. Alison Kinnaird: Art in Glass

Glass artist and musician Alison Kinnaird showcases her engraved glass work, featuring a range of pieces from large installations to small, intimate pieces.

5. Art to Wear: International Contemporary Jewellery Show

Jewellery exhibition featuring work from 30 independent designers from around the globe, including local emerging talents. Each design strikes a balance between modern art and wearable fashion.

6.  West End Fair 

Hosting over 100 designers, makers and artists from all over the UK, this popular fair just off Princes St provides a great opportunity to meet talented makers and purchase items directly.

7. Artists at Patriothall

A selling exhibition by professional makers based at Patriothall Studios, one of Edinburgh’s longest running studio complexes incorporating a unique, industrial style, gallery in the centre of Stockbridge.

8. Stockbridge Ceramics: Clay 2024

A show of contemporary ceramics featuring resident and guest artists, celebrating the versatility of clay. This selling exhibition spans an imaginative spectrum of concepts and working methods.

9. Frances Priest: Unfixing

Frances Priest’s solo exhibition, Unfixing, marks a new direction in her practice, exploring universally familiar pattern structures through wall and plinth-based ceramic pieces, as well as a series of works on paper.

10. Visual Arts Scotland: Now and Then

Dalkeith Palace will continue a year of centenary celebrations for VAS and will showcase over 540 artworks and 341 artists and makers, making this a record-breaking exhibition as they honour their 100th year.
