Jaap Sinke
Fenneke is a visual artist and maker, specialising in contemporary artists' books and paper sculptures. These are all one-off pieces and can be organic, dynamic, quiet, powerful, informative, delicate, vibrant, conceptual, experimental or sculptural. She investigates the versatility of paper through printmaking, papercutting, paperfolding and bookbinding, inspired by natural and geometrical patterns found while sea kayaking, mountaineering or travelling. Fenneke's interest in architecture, design and construction also influences the way she approaches a certain project. It will then be meticiously planned by doing research, making sketches and prototypes. By using different methods, processes and styles, she wants to show people what you can do with such a simple yet effective material. She has exhibited in galleries such as Royal Scottish Academy, Aberdeen Art Gallery, Bankside Gallery, and various libraries in Denver, USA. In 2018, she received the Visual Artist and Craft Maker Award from Creative Scotland for a 2-week non-toxic printmaking residency in Massachussetts, USA. Recently she completed a residency in Germany with master bookbinder Nadine Werner where she learnt various non-adhesive bookbinding techniques such as the Steck album and the woven rod structure. Her works are held in private and public collections such as National Libraries of Scotland and Edinburgh College.
