Alis Le May is a Glasgow based artist and designer. Her commercial craft practice is a sustainable bespoke tailoring atelier where she practices heritage techniques, utilising natural fibres. Much of Alis’s work is sewn by hand, with needle and thread, and stands in opposition to an extractive and ethically ambivalent fashion industry. Thousands of hidden hand-stitches go into each bespoke suit and coat, increasing their strength, visual appeal and longevity.
Alongside her bespoke business, she maintains an explorative textile art practice, often combining real, preserved flora with textiles to create costumes and textile objects rooted in the local ecology, and informed by historic architecture. Alis regularly collaborates with other textile craftspeople including natural dyers and weavers.
As a passionate advocate for her craft, Alis co-founded Clothworks Glasgow C.I.C. - a social enterprise which teaches sewing skills as a tool for improving individual wellbeing and strengthening communities. Clothworks Glasgow C.I.C. runs regular free mending events, teaching hand sewing skills to the local community in Glasgow.
