Taking inspiration from a local river, the flow been mapped onto a panel surface in pictorial perspective. When the carved oak is eventually sanded smooth, the grain pattern reveals itself.

Floating Cube with Reeds

Sycamore is a close grain wood that will sand to a seamless flow of light graduations, responding to the changing light of day. White wax finish.

Poppadum

A simple idea of folding a round disc of paper and fixing the waves. Transposing a photographic image onto wood and carving the shape to agitate the wood grain.

Floating cube with Grasses

Carved sycamore with white wax finish. A pictorial space led by photographic study and water-meadow grass in a studio setting. Exploring shapes and shadows in shallow landscape viewpoint.

Black Ripples Cross

Hand-carved upon oak and painted to highlight the shapes and grain. The result was intriguing with ambiguities of form depending on the light direction and unexpected grain definition.
