The Hugo Burge foundation is offering a life-changing opportunity for three emerging artists and craftspeople.
Closing date: 6 Jan 2025
The Hugo Burge Foundation, previously known as the Marchmont Makers Foundation, is launching the Springboard Studios programme, which is designed to help young artists and craftspeople kickstart creative careers. Applications for this exciting residency scheme are invited between Friday 8th November 2024 and Monday 6th January 2025.
Hugo Burge, who died in 2023 aged 51, was a British entrepreneur, philanthropist and art-lover who spent the last ten years of his life investing in establishing and fostering a creative hub around the Marchmont Estate in Berwickshire (just over an hour’s drive from Edinburgh).
The Foundation, renamed earlier this year in his memory, aims to continue his passion for the arts by creating a lasting legacy for the Scottish Borders and beyond.
The three spaces are part of The Hugo Burge Foundation Studios, situated in specially renovated historic buildings on the estate, are described as “warm, spacious and characterful”.
They are being offered to artists who are 30 and under, free of charge for a year (with a possibility of extending by a further year subject to availability), along with a grant of up to £1,000 to support the purchase of tools and materials.
The studios themselves are offered free for the duration of the tenancy but do not include accommodation. The HBF can offer affordable accommodation for up to two tenants, if willing to share, at nearby Fogo Cottage.
Springboard tenants will join the larger creative community at the Hugo Burge Foundation, which includes potters, silversmiths, chair-makers, sculptors and artists visiting on our monthly residencies. They are expected to contribute to this community during their time here, participating in Open Studios and social events, and offering talks or workshops where appropriate.
