Cairngorms 2030’ Residency 2025

Opportunity for two paid residencies for creatives to collaborate in spring 2025, exploring the Cairngorms National Park's 2030 net zero climate ambitions.

Closing date: 17 Nov 2024

Bothy Project in partnership with the Cairngorms National Park Authority are seeking two arts practitioners based within the National Park to undertake a residency with a view to developing collaborative work that responds to the Park’s 2030 climate ambitions for Net Zero

We seek proposals that will build a greater connection to landscape and place, so communities, visitors and other audiences are inspired to get involved in community-based activity and action that tackles our climate crises.

The residency will take place from the 14 April – 24 April 2025, at a cottage within the Glen Tanar Estate, near Aboyne.

Applications are welcome from practitioners working in visual arts, craft & design, music, literature and performance, who are based in the Cairngorms National Park. Duos may have experience of working together or may use this opportunity to do so for the first time. Applications are welcome from those who work in the same discipline or different disciplines.

The residency will provide the selected duo with time and space to consider their practice and develop and/or gather information for their project. Proposals should include an appropriate way for the research or work generated by the residency to be shared with an audience before 30 June 2025.

The successful applicants will each receive nine days research time and ten nights accommodation, a fee of £864* and support with travel costs. A production budget of £1000 is available to develop and realise your collaborative proposal. Local support will be provided by the Cairngorms National Park Authority team and production and professional development support by Bothy Project.

We will be hosting an online Q&A session to answer questions about the location and application process on Wednesday 6 November, 5:00-6:00pm. Book your place here.

The accommodation

The residency will take place at Etnach Cottage on the Glen Tanar Estate, with direct views to Mount Keen, Scotland’s most easterly Munro. Residents will be driven to and from the cottage at the beginning and end of their residency, with other journeys possible by foot or bike. The cottage is a large comfortable cottage with a number of rooms, however residents will be expected to manage the generator for power, stoves for heat, and recognise that they will be some distance (5 miles) from the estate’s main buildings and should plan to arrive with what they need for the duration of the residency (one drop-off of fresh provisions will be arranged mid-residency). There is no Wi-Fi and phone signal is limited to an EE signal picked up outside the cottage.

We are grateful to Glen Tanar Estate for hosting this year’s ‘Cairngorms 2030’ Residency, whilst Bothy Project are working to site a new permanent residency location within the Cairngorms National Park.

Glen Tanar is set in Scotland’s spectacular Cairngorms National Park in Royal Deeside and provides the perfect base for reflection and exploring the outdoors. From rugged heather moorland to towering Caledonian pine forests, from the winding River Tanar to the majestic waters of the River Dee, this working Highland estate has been responsibly cared for by four generations of the Coats family since 1905.

Cairngorms 2030

This residency is part of Cairngorms 2030, specifically Strand 2 of the Community Arts & Culture project. The Cairngorms 2030 programme is made possible by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players.

In 2022, Bothy Project and Cairngorms National Park Authority ran a pilot residency with selected artist Naomi Mcintosh.

*For funded residencies, Bothy Project calculates fees for residents taking into account the Real Living Wage. All residents are paid the same rate, irrespective of discipline or experience. Our residencies are relatively short and generally non-commissioning. Where production is expected, an additional fee is provided.
