Masterclass with Oliver Budd: New Solutions for Seeing, Setting & Siting

In this four-day masterclass, held in a new Mosaic & Glass workshop in Falkirk, Scotland, experienced mosaicists will learn from English artist Oliver Budd how to transpose artwork into mosaic. Participants can choose to create a design of their own or interpret another artist’s work. Oliver will guide the process of translating the design into the mosaic language, including techniques for scaling, colour selection, and cutting materials like vitreous glass tiles and smalti. A key focus of the course is a unique setting technique, developed by Budd Mosaics, which is suitable for all installation environments, including outdoor and wet areas.

Students will finish their mosaic by bonding it into a custom aluminium tray, then grouting and preparing it for installation. Oliver’s expert guidance, informed by his lifetime of mosaic experience, will help students elevate their skills, making them confident in creating both small and large-scale public mosaic works.
