9.30– 10.00: Registration

10.00 – 10.15: Welcome address by Laura Hamilton, Curator of the Collins Gallery

10.15– 11.15: Michele Walker: The World of Sashiko
Michele offers a personal account of her experiences in Japan both as a maker   and as a curator, describing her research and development of the exhibition and how the 3 year practice-led AHRC Fellowship impacted upon her own work.

11.15 – 11.45: Refreshments

11.45 – 12.45: Tim Parry-Williams: Plain Stripe Check
A meeting between two weavers, Tim Parry -Williams and Ikuko Ida in 2003 resulted in an exhibition which celebrates the shared qualities of timelessness, visual strength, understatement and simplicity of woven textiles produced in Japan and the UK over the years. First shown in Tokyo, the exhibition which includes samples from museum and private collections, as well as contemporary work by the curators, is now touring internationally.
Tim describes the evolution and concept behind this remarkable project.

12.45–2.15pm: Lunch & opportunity to visit the exhibition

2.15 – 3.00pm: Sara Keith: Metal As Dye
During her doctoral research at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, University of Dundee, Sara has introduced fine silver to shaped resist Shibori textiles  and by intertwining the contemporary with the traditional, soft textiles with hard metal, hand and machine skills, Western and Eastern practices, she reveals  her unique approach to the creative process.

3.00 – 3.30 Tea/Coffee

3.30 – 4.30pm : Lou Taylor: From shame to desire, from recycling to polluting: the myriad uses and shifting cultural meanings of second hand clothing in Britain from the 18th century to the present day. Building on the archive research of John Styles through to the design work of Rebecca Earley, Lou’s presentation has been selected to compliment the recycled aspect of Japanese sashiko garments by charting the fate and redemption of second hand clothing down the centuries in Britain.

4.30 –5.30pm: Wine & networking and viewing the exhibition.
